A good shell jacket is lightweight, packable and keeps you dry even in heavy weather. We stock models for everything from day hikes in low-lying terrain to demanding mountain trips and ski tours. Shell jackets typically feature underarm ventilation zips, an adjustable hood and pockets positioned to work with a backpack.
For light use and warmer days, a lightweight 2.5-layer shell jacket is sufficient. For tougher use and long trips in demanding weather, we recommend a more robust 3-layer shell jacket. A good shell jacket is an investment that will last for many years with proper care.
For the conditions of northern Norway, layering is the smartest approach. A shell jacket is a waterproof and windproof outer layer with no insulation, designed to protect against rain and wind. It is worn as the outermost layer in a layering system, over a warm mid-layer.
Choose a shell jacket when you need full protection against rain and snow. A softshell breathes better and is more comfortable in dry weather, but is not waterproof.
