We carry winter jackets from Norrøna, Montane, Helly Hansen, Arc'teryx and Rab, including Norrøna trollveggen and lofoten, Arc'teryx Atom and Beta Insulated, Patagonia Fitz Roy Down and Helly Hansen Odin.
Down gives the most warmth for its weight and packs small. It is the warmest choice in dry cold, but loses its insulating ability when it gets wet.
Synthetic insulation keeps you warm even when it gets damp, and handles sleet and rain better. It is a good choice on the coast and for activities where you work up a sweat.
Parkas are long and cover hips and thighs – best for everyday use, the city and standing still in the cold. Insulated shell jackets combine a waterproof shell with insulation, and suit days that are both cold and wet. Mid-layer jackets are light and worn under a shell on hikes, or on their own on chilly days.
Think about how you will use the jacket: if you stand still a lot, you need more warmth than when you are on the move. Check that the hood is good and the back is long enough, and try the jacket on with a thick sweater underneath. In our stores in Tromsø you can try several models.
Down gives the most warmth for its weight and packs small, but loses warmth when it gets wet. Synthetic insulation stays warm when damp and dries faster. In the coastal climate of northern Norway, with sleet and rain, synthetic insulation or an insulated shell jacket is often the safest choice – in dry cold, down is best.
Fill power measures how much the down lofts. The higher the number, the more warmth per gram. 700–800 is high quality and makes light jackets that keep you warm.
A parka is long and covers your hips and thighs. It suits everyday use, work and the city, and whenever you stand still in the cold – for example at the bus stop during the polar night.
Not all of them. Insulated shell jackets and many parkas have a waterproof outer fabric, while down jackets and mid-layer jackets usually only handle light precipitation. See the product description for each jacket.
