A shell trouser is the waterproof outer layer for your legs. It keeps rain, snow and wind out and lets sweat escape, and you wear it over wool base layers or hiking trousers. Here you will find men's shell trousers for everything from rainy everyday weather to ski touring and mountains.
We carry men's shell trousers from Norrøna, Arc'teryx, Helly Hansen, Rab, Montane, Klättermusen and Patagonia. Prices range from around NOK 600 for simple rain trousers to around NOK 11,000 for technical mountain trousers.
Norrøna has GORE-TEX trousers in the falketind, lofoten, trollveggen, fjørå, møre and lyngen ranges – from light hiking trousers to rugged ski-touring trousers. Arc'teryx has the Beta trousers and the Alpha SV Bib for the toughest weather.
More affordable, good hiking options are the Rab Firewall, the Montane Cetus and Phase, the Helly Hansen Verglas and the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L. For everyday wear, work and rain, Helly Hansen has simple rain trousers such as the HH Rain Pant and Moss.
Look for side zips – they give ventilation and make it easy to put the trousers on over boots and skis. For ski touring and deep snow, a bib model with braces is a good choice because it keeps snow out at the waist. 3-layer trousers withstand the most wear, while 2.5-layer is easier to pack. Shell trousers are waterproof, breathable trousers without insulation. They are worn as the outer layer over wool base layers or hiking trousers and keep rain, snow and wind out.
Your legs work hard on hikes and climbs. Side zips release heat and moisture so you stay dry from the inside. Full-length zips also make it easy to put the trousers on over boots and skis.
A bib with braces comes up higher and keeps snow out when you fall or move through deep snow. It suits ski touring and freeriding. Regular shell trousers are lighter and simpler for hiking and everyday use.
