Layering is the principle behind smart clothing, whether you are hiking in the mountains, working outdoors, or simply heading out into a northern Norwegian winter. In this guide we take you through everything you need to know about layering, which materials to choose, and how to adapt your clothing to different activities and temperatures.
What is layering?
Layering is a method of building up your clothing in three main layers, each with its own function. Together, the layers keep you dry, warm and comfortable whatever the weather and however active you are. The advantage of layering is that you can easily adjust your temperature by adding or removing a layer as needed – something that is absolutely essential when you move from a warm interior to cold wind, or from a gentle walk to intense activity.
The three layers are:
- Base layer (moisture transport layer) – moves moisture away from the skin
- Mid layer (insulating layer) – retains warmth
- Outer layer (shell) – protects against wind and rain
Let us look more closely at each layer.
Layer 1: Base layer – the moisture transport layer
The base layer sits directly against your skin and has one important job: to transport sweat and moisture away from your body. Dry skin is warm skin, and this layer is therefore the foundation of your entire layering system.
What to look for:
- Materials such as wool (merino wool), polyester or a blend
- A close-fitting cut
- Quick-drying properties
Which materials work best?
Merino wool is the first choice for many. It retains warmth even when wet, resists odour and works for both everyday use and demanding trips. Synthetic materials such as polyester are more affordable, dry even faster and withstand frequent washing – but they can start to smell after intense use.
What to avoid: Cotton is the worst choice for a base layer. Cotton absorbs sweat, holds on to moisture and becomes cold against the skin. Save your cotton garments for warm summer days or indoor use.
Tip: In very cold weather you can wear two base layers – a thin one closest to the skin and a slightly thicker one on top. This provides extra insulation without making your clothing feel bulky.
Layer 2: Mid layer – the insulating layer
The mid layer is there to retain your body heat. It works by trapping air between its fibres, and it is this air that insulates against the cold. The more air the layer can hold, the warmer it will be.
Common types of mid layer:
Fleece is the classic choice. Fleece is lightweight, breathable and dries quickly. It comes in various thicknesses, from thin microfleece to thick 300-weight fleece for extra cold. Fleece allows moisture from the base layer to pass through and is comfortable to wear.
Wool jumpers provide good insulation, particularly in a heavier knit. Wool retains warmth even when slightly damp, and is a good choice for lower-intensity activity or sedentary work.
Down jackets are the warmest option for their weight. Down packs down small and insulates well – ideal for cold trips where you are not sweating heavily. The drawback is that down loses its insulating ability when wet.
Synthetic insulation (PrimaLoft, Coreloft and similar) works like down but retains warmth even when damp. This is a better choice in wet climates or for activities where you sweat a great deal.
When do you need more than one mid layer?
In very cold weather or at low activity levels you can combine several mid layers – for example a thin fleece underneath and a down gilet or down jacket on top. This gives you the flexibility to regulate your warmth.
Layer 3: Outer layer – the shell
The shell is your defence against the elements. It must protect against rain, snow and wind, while still allowing sweat and moisture from the inner layers to escape. This is often the most expensive part of your outfit, but also the most important investment for being outdoors all year round in a northern Norwegian climate.
Three main types of shell:
Hardshell (shell jacket) is fully waterproof and windproof, most often featuring a membrane such as Gore-Tex or equivalent. A hardshell withstands heavy rain, sleet and strong wind, and is a must for trips in unsettled weather. The material is stiffer than softshell, but modern shell jackets are surprisingly comfortable.
Softshell is more flexible and breathable, but not quite as waterproof. Softshell is well suited to active use in dry or lightly wet conditions – for example skiing, climbing or jogging in cool weather.
Windshell is the lightest option, designed for light wind and cold weather without rain. Many windshells pack down to the size of a fist and are handy to carry as an extra layer in your rucksack.
What to look for in a shell jacket:
- Waterproofing measured in millimetres of water column (minimum 10,000 mm for proper rain, 20,000+ for extreme conditions)
- Breathability (MVTR value – the higher, the more breathable)
- Sealed seams
- An adjustable hood that fits over a hat or helmet
- Underarm ventilation zips
- Pockets positioned to work with a harness or rucksack
Layering in practice – examples for different situations
Everyday life in Tromsø in winter (-10 °C, light wind):
- Base layer: Merino wool long-sleeved top and leggings
- Mid layer: Thick fleece or wool jumper
- Outer layer: Shell jacket or winter jacket with insulation
- In addition: Hat, mittens and neck gaiter
A day hike in the mountains in autumn (rain and 5 °C):
- Base layer: Thin merino wool or synthetic moisture transport layer
- Mid layer: Lightweight fleece
- Outer layer: Hardshell jacket and waterproof trousers
- In addition: An extra fleece or down jacket in the rucksack for breaks
Ski touring in the mountains (cold and active):
- Base layer: Merino wool
- Mid layer: Thin fleece (preferably with ventilation)
- Outer layer: Softshell or lightweight shell jacket
- In addition: Down jacket in the rucksack for breaks and summit stops
Sedentary outdoor activities (fishing, hunting, security work):
- Base layer: Thick merino wool
- Mid layer: Thick fleece + down gilet or down jacket
- Outer layer: Winter jacket or insulated shell jacket
Common layering mistakes – and how to avoid them
Mistake 1: Too much, too soon Many people dress too warmly before they start an activity. You should feel slightly cold during the first few minutes – your body warms up quickly once you get moving. If you start out too warm, you will sweat through your base layer, and then feel cold as soon as you stop.
Mistake 2: Cotton in the base layer Wearing a cotton T-shirt under outdoor clothing is a classic mistake. Cotton absorbs sweat and cools you down. Switch to merino wool or a synthetic material.
Mistake 3: A shell jacket without ventilation Even the best breathable membrane cannot expel all perspiration during intense activity. Shell jackets with underarm ventilation zips are worth their weight in gold.
Mistake 4: Forgetting your head and extremities The body loses a great deal of heat through the head, hands and feet. A hat, mittens and good socks are just as important as your jacket. In truly cold weather, it is also wise to wear a buff over your mouth and neck.
Mistake 5: Wrong size Layering only works if the layers fit over one another without being too tight. Your shell jacket must be roomy enough to accommodate fleece and down underneath – but not so large that it lets cold air in.

- Merino wool: Warm, low-odour and retains heat even when wet. Expensive and requires gentle washing. Best for base layers and everyday use.

How to choose the right combination:
Consider these three questions before you invest in your layering system:
- What are you doing? Active outdoor pursuits require more breathable materials than sedentary activities.
- What weather will you face? Wet climates call for a better shell; cold climates require more insulation.
- How long will you be outside? Longer trips require more options in your pack so you can adjust to changing conditions.
Caring for your clothing
Proper washing and maintenance significantly extends the life of your garments. Merino wool can be machine washed at 30 degrees with a mild detergent – avoid fabric softener. Shell jackets should be washed with a specialist detergent for technical garments and re-proofed regularly to maintain their water-repellent properties. Down jackets can be washed at home, but should be tumble-dried with tennis balls in the drum to fluff the down back up.
