Down jackets are known for their exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio. Light, packable and lofty – a down jacket delivers a great deal of warmth without being heavy to carry. This makes it ideal both as a warm outer layer and as a mid-layer under a shell jacket on the coldest days.
In our range you will find down jackets from leading quality brands. Many models use RDS-certified down (Responsible Down Standard), which guarantees that the down comes from responsible production.
Down jackets are often given a fill power rating that indicates how warm the down is. 600–700 fp is suitable for everyday use, whilst 800+ fp is appropriate for extreme conditions. Bear in mind that down loses its insulating ability when wet – down jackets should therefore be worn as a mid-layer in damp conditions, or chosen as a hybrid model with a water-repellent treatment.
For conditions in northern Norway, layering is the smartest approach. Next to the skin, a base layer in wool or technical synthetic; a mid-layer for warmth; and an outer layer to protect against the elements. With the right combination you can adjust your temperature to suit your activity and conditions without having to change your entire wardrobe.
Down provides more warmth relative to weight than any other material, and packs down very small. This makes down jackets ideal for cold conditions and for carrying in a rucksack.
Fill power measures how well the down insulates. A higher figure means more warmth per gram, which means a lighter and more packable jacket for the same level of warmth.
