What is the difference between down and synthetic insulation?

Both types of insulation work the same way: by trapping air in small pockets close to the body. The difference lies in the material.

Down comes from ducks or geese and is always blended with a small proportion of feathers to help the garment hold its shape. Fill power (also known as CUIN) is the most important figure to understand – it measures how much volume a given amount of down fills, and the higher the fill power, the lighter the jacket you need for the same level of warmth.

Synthetic insulation consists of artificially produced microfibres, such as Primaloft, which mimic the structure of down. The key distinction is that synthetic insulation is a microfibre material, whereas down comes from ducks or geese.

Advantages of a down jacket

  • Best warmth per gram. No other insulation provides as much warmth for as little weight.
  • Packs down very small. A good down jacket can be compressed to the size of a fist in your pack.
  • Long lifespan. With proper care (see our guide to down jacket maintenance), a down jacket can last many seasons.
  • Comfortable and soft against the body.

Disadvantages of a down jacket

  • Loses its insulating ability when wet. This is the classic weakness of traditional down.
  • Takes a long time to dry compared with synthetic.
  • Requires specialist washing. Down cannot tolerate ordinary detergent or fabric conditioner.
  • Generally more expensive than comparable synthetic alternatives.

Many manufacturers address the moisture problem with hydrophobic down treatment, which makes the down more resistant to moisture. Such treatments give you the best of both worlds, but the jacket tends to cost somewhat more. For conditions in Northern Norway, where sea fog, sleet and sudden changes in weather are part of everyday life, this type of treated down can be well worth the investment.

Advantages of a synthetic jacket

  • Keeps you warm even when damp. Synthetic fibres are water-repellent, which helps the jacket withstand a light rain shower before the layer underneath becomes wet, without compromising its insulating performance.
  • Dries quickly.
  • Easy to wash. Synthetic garments can be laundered in the usual way in a washing machine, without any risk of the filling collapsing and clumping together.
  • Less expensive than most down jackets offering equivalent warmth.
  • Breathes better during activity, according to many users and experts.

Disadvantages of a synthetic jacket

  • Slightly heavier and bulkier than down for the same level of warmth.
  • Shorter lifespan – synthetic insulation loses some of its loft (and therefore its insulating ability) more quickly than down over time.

Weather conditions in Northern Norway influence the choice

Northern Norway offers some of the most variable weather conditions in the country. From the dry, clear winter days in the inland areas of Troms and Finnmark, where temperatures can drop well below minus twenty, to the wet and wind-exposed coastal areas around Lofoten and Vesterålen, nature places very different demands on your insulated jacket.

In Tromsø and the surrounding area you often experience both extremes within the same season – and sometimes the same day. A clear high-pressure spell with sharp sub-zero temperatures can, within hours, give way to damp sea air and sleet as low-pressure systems move in from the Norwegian Sea. Whether you are heading on a ski tour in the Lyngen Alps or a quiet evening walk up Tromsdalstinden, the combination of cold and potential moisture is something you should plan for.

Practical tip for Northern Norwegian conditions: If you choose a down jacket for use in Northern Norway, look for models with hydrophobic down treatment or a hybrid construction. If the jacket will be used frequently along the coast or during activities where you perspire heavily, synthetic insulation is often the safer choice. Whichever type of insulation you choose, it should be combined with a good shell layer on the outside – in Northern Norwegian weather, a proper hardshell jacket is almost as important as the insulation itself.

Hybrid jackets – the best of both worlds?

An increasingly popular option is hybrid jackets, which combine down and synthetic insulation in a single garment. Typically, synthetic insulation is placed in areas exposed to moisture (shoulders, sleeves), while down is used where it stays dry (body, back). This gives you much of the warmth and packability of down, while the jacket handles wetter conditions better.

How to choose: three questions to ask yourself

  1. Where will the jacket be used most? Dry and cold conditions favour down. Wet and variable conditions favour synthetic.
  2. Will the jacket be used during active pursuits or as a stationary insulating layer? Active use with heavy perspiration calls for synthetic. Rest stops and sitting still in the cold call for down.
  3. How much do weight and pack size matter? If the jacket needs to be carried far and packed down, down wins. If weight is less important, synthetic can be an equally good choice at a lower price.
