A good pair of hiking trousers should handle a long day on the terrain, breathe on the uphills, and keep out wind and light rain. Here we have gathered all our men's hiking trousers: from lightweight softshell trousers with stretch to robust trousers in G-1000 that withstand scrub, rocks and many seasons.
We stock hiking trousers from Norrøna, Fjällräven, Klättermusen, Montane, Patagonia and Helly Hansen, including the Norrøna falketind flex1, Fjällräven Keb, Klättermusen Gere and Patagonia Terravia.
Softshell is elastic, wind-resistant and breathes well. It suits mountain trips, summit tours in dry weather and fast day trips where freedom of movement matters most. The Norrøna falketind and femund flex1, Montane Terra and Rab Torque are examples.
G-1000 and other durable fabrics withstand more wear and can be treated with wax for better protection against wind and moisture. It is a good choice for long trips, hunting, fishing and cabin life. The Fjällräven Keb and Abisko are the classics.
Hiking trousers are water-resistant, not waterproof. If you are expecting sustained rain or wet snow, you should keep a pair of shell trousers in your pack or wear them as an outer layer. The weather changes quickly in Northern Norway, so many people bring both on longer trips.
Hiking trousers should give your knees room when taking high steps, without being too wide at the bottom. Several models are available in short and regular lengths, and many have reinforcements at the knees, seat and inner calf. Check the size guide on the product page, or ask us. In our shops in Tromsø you can try on several models.
Hiking trousers are designed to breathe and move in, and can handle wind and light rain. Shell trousers have a waterproof membrane, such as Gore-Tex, and keep you dry in sustained rain, but breathe less well. Many people wear hiking trousers as their main layer and keep the shell trousers in their pack.
Softshell is an elastic, tightly woven fabric that blocks most wind, handles light rain and breathes well. It offers good freedom of movement and suits active trips in dry or changeable weather.
G-1000 is Fjällräven's durable fabric made from polyester and cotton. It withstands scrub and rocks, and can be treated with Greenland Wax for better protection against wind and moisture. The wax gradually washes out and needs to be reapplied.
For the mountains, a softshell trouser with stretch and reinforcements at the knees and seat is a good starting point – for example the Norrøna falketind flex1 or Klättermusen Gere. The weather changes quickly in the north, so keep a pair of shell trousers in your pack.
We stock hiking trousers from Norrøna, Fjällräven, Klättermusen, Montane, Patagonia and Helly Hansen. The range varies with season and stock.
