Proper shoe care is not just about appearance – it determines how long your shoes stay waterproof and comfortable. Here is a straightforward guide to washing and waterproofing both Gore-Tex shoes and shoes without a membrane.

Proper shoe care is not just about appearance – it determines how long your shoes stay waterproof and comfortable. Here is a straightforward guide to washing and waterproofing both Gore-Tex shoes and shoes without a membrane.

Why shoes need maintenance

All boots and shoes – whether made of leather, textile or fitted with a membrane such as Gore-Tex – should be treated and maintained regularly. If water penetrates the outer material and reaches the foot, the shoe becomes heavy, difficult to dry and may in the worst case lose its shape or develop mould. Regular waterproofing and proper washing prevents this and significantly extends the life of the shoe.

How to care for shoes with a membrane

Gore-Tex and similar membranes are both waterproof and breathable. The membrane keeps water out even when the outer surface material of the shoe is not waterproof in itself – but the outer surface treatment (DWR) wears down over time and must be renewed for the shoe to function at its best.

How to wash Gore-Tex shoes:

  1. Brush off loose dirt and mud with a soft brush or damp cloth.
  2. Remove the insole and rinse away sand and grit, including from the inside of the shoe.
  3. Use lukewarm water and a liquid detergent that is free from fragrance. Many Gore-Tex models can also be machine washed at 30 degrees – always check the care label first.
  4. Avoid bleach, stain removers and oil-based products, as these can damage the membrane.
  5. Allow the shoe to dry naturally at room temperature. Avoid direct heat from a radiator or boot dryer, and stuff the shoe with newspaper to help it keep its shape and speed up drying.

When should you waterproof? When water no longer beads and runs off the surface, it is a sign that the water-repellent treatment has worn down and should be renewed. Use a spray-based, water-based waterproofing product – never wax or grease, as these can block the pores and impair the breathability of the membrane.

How to care for shoes without a membrane

Shoes without a membrane – typically simpler hiking shoes, safety shoes or everyday shoes in leather or synthetic material – require just as much attention, but in a slightly different way.

For leather shoes:

Leather needs nourishment in addition to water repellency to stay supple over time. Apply a water-based wax or leather cream after the shoe has been cleaned and dried. Waxing provides both protection and flexibility in the material, and prevents the leather from cracking or stiffening.

For shoes in synthetic material or textile:

Spray or liquid waterproofing works best here. Unlike wax, these products do not soften the material and can therefore be used more frequently as part of regular maintenance. Waterproofing sprays of this kind are also the best option for combination materials, such as split leather and textile together.

General advice for both types:

  • Clean the shoes thoroughly before waterproofing – waterproofing applied to dirty shoes does not bond well.
  • Allow the shoes to reach room temperature before waterproofing, so that the pores in the material open up and the product is absorbed more effectively.
  • Never dry shoes using high heat. This can damage both leather and adhesive, and is particularly harmful to Gore-Tex membranes.

Safety shoes: an extra reason to keep on top of maintenance

If you wear safety shoes at work, your footwear is often subjected to harder wear than ordinary hiking shoes – mud, moisture, chemicals and long working days all take their toll. Regular cleaning and waterproofing helps maintain both comfort and protective properties for longer. Frequently asked questions about shoe care

How often should I waterproof my shoes? As a rule of thumb, you should waterproof when water stops beading off the surface. With frequent use in wet terrain, this may be necessary several times per season.

Can I wash Gore-Tex shoes in a washing machine? Many models can handle this at 30 degrees, but always check the manufacturer's care instructions first, as this varies between models and brands.

Why do my shoes smell even after washing? This is often caused by moisture that has not been allowed to dry out properly. Make sure the shoes get adequate ventilation between each use, and consider an odour-eliminating spray if the problem persists.

Summary

Whether your shoes have a Gore-Tex membrane or not, the principle is the same: clean thoroughly, waterproof regularly, and avoid rapid drying with high heat. With a little consistent routine, hiking boots and safety shoes will remain waterproof, comfortable and functional for many seasons to come.
