A pack of 40–59 litres is the right size for weekend trips, hut-to-hut hikes and mountain trips with an overnight stay. It has room for clothes, food and a sleeping bag, and a carry system that puts the weight on your hips so you can walk for a long time.
We carry 40–59 litre hiking packs from Osprey, Norrøna and Exped. Prices range from around NOK 2,000 to around NOK 4,000.
The Osprey Atmos AG LT 50 and the women's model Aura AG LT 50 have Osprey's ventilated AntiGravity back, which fits closely and lets air through, and are good for long trips with a heavy load. The Osprey Talon 44 and 55 and the women's model Tempest 44 are lighter, slimmer packs for fast trips. The Norrøna Commuter 40L and Exped Lightning 50 are also in the range.
Your back length matters more than your height: many packs come in several back sizes or have an adjustable back. The hip belt should sit on your hip bones and carry most of the weight. Women's models have a shorter back and a hip belt shaped for women. If you are only going on day hikes, see day packs of 20–39 litres and our day pack guide. 20–39 litres is enough for a day hike. 40–59 litres suits a weekend trip and one or two nights in a cabin or a tent with a light load. For longer trips with a tent and a lot of food you often need 60 litres or more.
Measure from the prominent vertebra at the base of your neck down to your hip bones. Compare with the pack's size chart, or visit the store and we will measure and adjust it for you.
Women's models such as the Osprey Aura and Tempest have a shorter back, narrower shoulder straps and a hip belt shaped for women. Many women find they fit better, but the most important thing is that the back length fits.
