Bags in the 40–59 litre range are ideal for short overnight trips – weekend trips in the mountains, hut-to-hut tours, or long day hikes with plenty of kit. They have room for a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, food and clothing for a few days.

For 1–3 day trips: 45–55 litres is often enough if you pack efficiently. For ultralight camping: perhaps even less. Make sure the hip belt fits well – it should carry most of the weight. A properly fitted rucksack in this size can last you for many years.
