Tunnel tents: good headroom and packing space, stable in wind. Dome tents: freestanding and versatile, easy to pitch. Tarp/shelter tents: ultralight, but require experience. For winter trips: 4-season tents with snow valances. For summer trips: 3-season tents with good ventilation. Invest in a quality tent – it will last for many years.
Check the hydrostatic head rating (ideally 3000+ mm for the fly) and how straightforward the tent is to pitch – particularly important if you often camp alone or pitch in the dark. Weight matters if you are carrying the tent yourself, while stability matters if you are heading into exposed terrain.
