Sleeping bags are rated with a comfort temperature and an extreme temperature. For summer: 0–10°C comfort. For spring/autumn: -5–0°C. For winter: -10–-20°C. For expedition: even lower. Down provides the most warmth per gram but does not handle moisture well. Synthetic is more affordable and performs even if it gets a little damp. Choose according to conditions and budget.
Sleeping bags are rated with a comfort, limit and extreme temperature. Choose according to the lowest night temperature you expect, but bear in mind that individual sensitivity to cold varies. Women often feel the cold a little more than men, so a sleeping bag with a bit of extra capacity is a safe choice. Also remember a good sleeping mat – without one, even the warmest sleeping bag will feel cold.
