Choose material according to use: merino wool does not smell, insulates well even when damp and is suitable from training to the cabin. Technical synthetic dries fastest and is best suited to intense activity. Cotton is comfortable for everyday use, but not ideal during sweaty activities.

The T-shirt that works for everything

For one garment that covers most situations, go for a short-sleeved merino wool T-shirt in 150–200 g/m². It is comfortable in summer and winter alike, does not smell after several days of wear and works equally well for training, hiking or in town.

Pay attention to fit

A good pair of hiking trousers should sit comfortably over the hips without being tight at the crotch or knees. Make sure the waistband does not dig in under the hip belt of your pack. Many models feature an adjustable waist and reinforcements in exposed areas such as the seat, knees and thighs.
