Choose material according to use: merino wool does not smell, insulates well even when damp and suits everything from training to a mountain cabin. Technical synthetic dries fastest and is best suited to intense activity. Cotton is comfortable for everyday use, but not ideal during sweaty activities.

For one garment that covers most situations, go for a short-sleeved merino wool t-shirt in 150–200 g/m². It is comfortable summer and winter alike, does not smell after several days of wear and works equally well for training, hiking or in the city.

Pay attention to fit

A good pair of hiking trousers should sit well over the hips without being tight in the crotch or at the knees. Make sure the waistband does not dig in under the hip belt of your rucksack. Many models have an adjustable waist and reinforcements in exposed areas such as the seat, knees and thighs.
