Portwest – Irish workwear heritage since 1904

Portwest is an Irish brand for workwear, protective clothing and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), founded in 1904 by Charles Hughes with a small shop on Bridge Street in Westport on Ireland's wild Atlantic coast. After more than 120 years, Portwest remains family-owned and operated by the Hughes family across four generations. The company has grown from a local draper's shop into a global player with over 5,100 employees and distribution to 130 countries through 10,000 safety retailers.

Portwest specialises in the design and manufacture of workwear, protective clothing, high-visibility garments (EN ISO 20471), flame-resistant clothing, rainwear (EN 343), safety footwear, work gloves and personal protective equipment. All products meet strict international safety standards, including ISO, EN, GOST, ANSI and NFPA. Technical materials and innovation

Portwest's proprietary Texo fabric (introduced 2010) delivers durability combined with stretch and moisture management. The company has dedicated R&D teams in Ireland and the United Kingdom working on smart textiles, advanced protective products and sustainable materials. Flame-resistant Bizflame and Modaflame technology protects against arc flash, molten metal and flame, whilst waterproof breathable membranes achieve 5,000 mm hydrostatic pressure. Portwest has also expanded its range through acquisitions such as Prime Mover, Huski Explorer and a shareholding in Italian company Base Protection.
