Lowe Alpine – the rucksack pioneer since 1967
Lowe Alpine was founded in 1967 by brothers Mike, Greg and Jeff Lowe in Utah, USA, with the ambition of making better rucksacks for climbing and hiking. Lowe Alpine Systems was officially registered in 1972, and the brand has since been a significant innovator in the rucksack market. In 2011, Lowe Alpine became part of Equip Outdoor Group (the same owner as Rab), and since 2014 the brand has focused exclusively on rucksacks.
Groundbreaking innovations
In 1967, Greg Lowe designed the Expedition Pack – the world's first rucksack with an internal aluminium frame, a revolution that made it possible to carry heavy loads without restricting movement. The design became the template for modern technical rucksacks. In 1978, the brand introduced the Vector Pack with the first adjustable back system and hip belt, and in 1979 they launched the ND series (Nanda Devi) – the world's first women's-specific rucksack range, named after a mountain in India. In 1980, Lowe Alpine made the first plastic buckles for rucksacks – another groundbreaking innovation.
AirZone back system and modern range
Lowe Alpine rucksacks use the proprietary AirZone back system, featuring a ventilated, suspended mesh that allows air to circulate and dramatically reduces back perspiration on the trail. The range includes day rucksacks, trekking rucksacks and travel rucksacks – all with ergonomic designs for comfortable carrying.
