A snow shovel is essential safety equipment on ski tours – used for digging out avalanche victims, building snow shelters and snow bivouacs, and generally assessing snow conditions.

Aluminium blade: strong enough for avalanche digging. Lightweight models weigh 400–700 g. Short shaft: packs down better, but gives less lifting power. Long/telescopic shaft: better lifting power and less strenuous digging. For ski touring: always carry a shovel, probe, and avalanche transceiver. Safety equipment is only useful if everyone in the group knows how to use it.
