Mid-layer trousers are worn under shell trousers or on their own in mild weather. They provide warmth without being heavy or restricting movement, and are an important part of layered clothing in cold conditions.

For intense activity: thin fleece or technical wool that breathes well. For stationary cold (such as hunting): thicker insulation. Make sure the trousers are not too tight – there should be room to move, and airflow between the layers is part of what keeps you warm.
A good pair of outdoor trousers should sit well over the hips without being tight across the crotch or knees. Make sure the waistband does not dig in under the hip belt of your rucksack. Many models have an adjustable waist and reinforcements on exposed areas such as the seat, knees and thighs.
