How to choose mid-layer trousers

For intense activity: thin fleece or technical wool that breathes well. For stationary cold (such as hunting): thicker insulation. Make sure the trousers are not too tight – there should be room to move, and airflow between the layers is part of what keeps you warm.

Mind the fit

A good pair of outdoor trousers should sit comfortably over the hips without being tight across the crotch or knees. Make sure the waistband does not dig in under the hip belt of your pack. Many models feature an adjustable waist and reinforcements at vulnerable areas such as the seat, knees and thighs.
