Morakniv – Swedish knife tradition since 1891

Morakniv was founded in 1891 by Frost-Erik Erson in the village of Östnor in Mora, Sweden. After four years as a lumberjack in North America, Erson returned home and started a factory producing sledges and carts – as well as knives. In 1912, Krång-Johan "KJ" Eriksson established a competing knife factory in the same village, and in 2005 the two were merged to form Mora of Sweden. The family company was awarded the Royal Warrant by the King of Sweden in 2011.

Knife ranges and ice drills

Production still takes place in Östnor, where craftsmanship and modern methods are combined. The range includes series such as Classic, Basic, Bushcraft, Companion, Pro, Garberg and Eldris – as well as the Mora drill (Mora ice auger), launched in 1955 and now a standard for ice fishing worldwide. The knives are produced with triple-laminated steel blades: a hard core of high-alloy steel encased in two layers of softer, tougher steel for both wear resistance and break resistance.

Steel, quality and applications

Carbon steel blades are hardened to 58–60 HRC, while stainless versions are hardened to 57–58. Classic models feature the characteristic red plastic handle, whilst the Garberg range offers full tang for more demanding applications. The knives are used daily by carpenters, fishermen, hunters, bushcrafters and outdoor enthusiasts.
