KAVU – the Seattle brand built for good days outside

KAVU was founded in 1993 by Barry Barr in Seattle. He started with the Strapcap, a hat designed to stay put in strong wind during fishing trips in Alaska, and sold the first units from his car. The brand is still based in the Ballard neighbourhood and remains privately owned.

From Strapcap to Rope Bag

KAVU is perhaps best known for the Rope Bag, a canvas sling bag with a climbing rope shoulder strap that launched in 2003 and has since become one of the best-selling outdoor bags in the USA. The range also includes caps, leisurewear, fleeces, vests and backpacks in bold patterns with a distinctly west-American character.

The name KAVU is an aviation acronym for Klear Above Visibility Unlimited – a clear day with unobstructed views all the way to the horizon. The casual, leisure-oriented approach suits those who want outdoor clothing and bags with personality, durability and a more relaxed style than the technical hiking brands.
