Compeed – Nordic plaster specialist since the 1980s

Compeed is a brand of hydrocolloid gel plasters that treat blisters, calluses, chafing and cold sores. The product was originally developed by Lars Backsell in Denmark while he was working at Coloplast A/S – a company known for ostomy medical products. In 1984, Backsell conducted clinical trials with the Swedish army based on a hydrocolloid prototype, and in 1986 Compeed was launched in Sweden as a blister plaster. The hydrocolloid technology was further developed from ostomy care, where the material had already been proven effective against moisture and friction.

Hydrocolloid technology and "second skin"

The Compeed plaster contains croscarmellose sodium (a water-soluble polymer) and adhesive resins, with an outer layer of elastomer and polyurethane. When the plaster is applied to a blister or chafed area, it absorbs body fluid and transforms into a soft mass that seals the wound and acts as a "second skin". It relieves pain immediately, prevents the blister from developing further, and allows the wound to heal in a moist environment that protects against bacteria. The plaster has tapered edges to prevent it from being torn off, and can be worn for up to 7 days.

Wide range

Compeed offers models for medium, small and large blister sizes, High Heel for blisters caused by high-heeled shoes, Sports with extra cushioning, and On Toes for toe blisters. The range also includes hard skin plasters, callus plasters, cold sore plasters and mouth ulcer plasters. Compeed is today owned by HRA Pharma (after Johnson & Johnson owned the brand from 2002), and is still manufactured by Coloplast. An indispensable choice for hikers, runners, walkers and anyone who wants to prevent blisters from ruining their trip.
