In Northern Norway we live close to nature – and that comes with obligations. On 20 June 2025 we were certified as an Eco-Lighthouse. For us it is not a symbol, but proof that sustainability is a genuine part of our everyday life.
Eco-Lighthouse – Our proof of responsibility
In Northern Norway we know what it means to live close to nature. The fjords, the mountains and the Arctic landscape are not just a beautiful backdrop – they are part of our everyday life. That comes with obligations.
On 20 June 2025, Jobb og Fritid AS was certified as an Eco-Lighthouse, and we are proud of that. But the certification is not an end in itself – it is proof that sustainability is genuinely a natural part of the way we run our shop, not something we have bolted on for appearances.
Clothing that lasts – not clothing that gets used up
The fashion industry is among the world's most polluting industries. Fast trends, cheap materials and a throwaway culture rather than a repair culture have come at a great cost to nature. We have chosen a different path.
The most important environmental measure we take every single day is simple: we sell quality that lasts. A garment that holds up for ten years has a lower environmental footprint than three garments replaced every three years. That is why our range is built around brands with a strong repair and warranty culture:
- Arc'Teryx – long lifespan and a lifetime guarantee against manufacturing defects
- Norrøna – Norwegian manufacturer with a strong focus on recycled materials and repair
- Helly Hansen – leisure wear built to withstand Nordic conditions over time
- Helly Hansen Workwear – robust workwear of technical quality that can be used year after year
We also actively encourage our customers to look after the clothes they already own. Sew on a button. Seal a seam. Re-proof a jacket. Small steps that considerably extend a garment's life – and save you money while sparing nature from unnecessary strain. Feel free to ask us in the shop; we are happy to give advice on care and repair.
What Eco-Lighthouse means for us in practice
Eco-Lighthouse is Norway's most widely used certification scheme for environmentally responsible operations, and it sets concrete requirements. Our certification covers five main areas: working environment, waste management, energy use, procurement and transport. Every year we report on how we are improving, and every three years the certification is audited by an independent consultant. We must document continuous improvement in order to retain our status – resting on our laurels is not an option.
For us this means systematic work across four concrete areas:
Responsible procurement
We choose brands and suppliers that take environmental responsibility seriously themselves – such as Norrøna, Arc'Teryx and Helly Hansen – and we prioritise products made from recycled or certified materials.
Environmentally friendly transport
We consolidate shipments to reduce the number of journeys, and work with freight companies that are actively committed to reducing emissions.
Waste reduction
Source separation in all shops and at the warehouse. Packaging from suppliers is handled through return schemes, and we reduce the use of single-use plastic wherever we can.
Efficient energy use
Energy monitoring in the shops, LED lighting and ongoing measures to keep consumption down – without compromising the customer experience.
Locally rooted – with an eye to the future
We are a local shop in Northern Norway, and that shapes everything we do. We know our customers, we know the nature around us, and we know what is demanded of clothing and equipment when the weather turns and the terrain is challenging. That local rootedness is our strength.
Our vision is clear: Jobb og Fritid AS shall be a shop known for high quality and long product life – with sustainability at the forefront at every stage. We work systematically to reduce waste and emissions, maximise the use of resources and ensure a safe and healthy working environment for our employees.
We also want to inspire customers and partners to make more environmentally friendly choices – through good advice in the shop and by highlighting products with a low environmental footprint. That is the conversation we enjoy most.
