Ingrid, how did a former professional cross-country skier end up working in a shop?
When I retired from cross-country skiing I needed a part-time job in the summer of 2023. That autumn I returned to my studies, which I had been combining with my skiing career, but I enjoyed work so much that I dropped out of my studies during the autumn and started working full time, and I have been here ever since.
What do you bring from your time as a professional athlete into the work you do today?
I grew up with hunting and fishing – and this, combined with having committed to cross-country skiing from a young age, means I have spent a great deal of time outdoors. This is the most important experience I draw on as a sales adviser – knowing how the right clothing and equipment can make for great experiences out in the field.
You are responsible for buying the Norrøna range. What do you look for when selecting the assortment?
We do our best to bring in products where functionality and quality contribute to great experiences, both in everyday life and out on trips. That might be a run around Prestvannet, a summit trip on Kattfjordeidet, or perhaps Norway end to end. Norrøna's collections include products that are excellent for each of their intended uses – and they combine well across the different collections. Our shop carries a wide selection, and we are proud of that.
What is the best thing about working in a shop, face to face with customers?
My most important task is to understand what customers need and guide them to the right product. When you get that right, it gives a real sense of achievement. We receive a good deal of training with the various suppliers, which in turn builds my knowledge and confidence as a sales adviser – but above all it means we can look after our customers in the best possible way.
